Performance
The 2018 Jaguar E-Pace has a significantly more powerful base
engine than the 2018 Mercedes GLA. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder
serves up 246 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, while the GLA's
2.0-liter four-cylinder is rated at 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of
torque. All-wheel drive is optional on the Mercedes but standard on the Jaguar.
Both the E-Pace and GLA deliver a comfortable and confident ride
on most paved surfaces. Their exceptional agility and easy maneuverability
enable them to negotiate acute turns and tight quarters with ease. However, the
Jaguar is slightly more stable because its average track is 2.5 inches wider in
front and 2.6 inches wide at the rear. In addition, it offers better off-road
capability than the GLA thanks to a 1.6-inch advantage in minimum ground
clearance. Also, the E-Pace has a towing capacity of 3,968 pounds while the GLA
is not supposed to be used for towing, according to Mercedes-Benz.
Luxury and Convenience
The Jaguar E-Pace and Mercedes-Benz GLA both have a comfortable,
refined, and well-equipped cabin. However, the former is slightly roomier with
0.4 inches more legroom and 0.8 inches more headroom in the front row, and 8
inches more legroom and 2.8 inches more headroom in the second row. As such,
you can expect it to provide a comfortable and relaxing ride on long road trips.
Additionally, the Jaguar can accommodate a lot more cargo with
24.2 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats and 52.7 cubic feet
behind the front seats. The GLA, on the other hand, only offers 17.2 cubic feet
with the rear seats up and 43.6 cubic feet with those seats folded.
If you opt for the E-Pace, you will get a number of optional
comfort and convenience features that are unavailable in the GLA. These
features include heated windshield washer nozzles, heads-up display, heated
rear seats, air-conditioned seats, and heated steering wheel.
Safety and Security
The 2018 Jaguar E-Pace provides better protection in collisions
than the 2018 Mercedes GLA because it is 578 to 879 pounds heavier. It also
comes with power child-safety locks, smart side airbags, whiplash reduction
system, and an optional cross-path warning system, all of which are absent in
the GLA.
Warranty
The Jaguar E-Pace offers a five-year or 60,000-mile basic warranty that covers the whole SUV and provides
24-hour roadside assistance. The Mercedes GLA, on the other hand, comes with a
four-year or 50,000-mile basic warranty. Also, the Jaguar's six-year corrosion
warranty expires one year later than the Mercedes'.
When you are choosing between the 2018 Jaguar E-Pace and the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA, you
should take your budget and needs into consideration. Both SUVs are a good
investment, but the E-Pace has more to offer in terms of ride comfort,
convenience, and safety.
