The current model Jaguar F-Pace and Lexus RX 350 are some of the most luxurious motor vehicles on the road, but how do they stack up against each other? And, perhaps most importantly, which one should you buy?

Neither the Jaguar F-Pace or Lexus RX 350 is a slouch on the road. The F-Pace has two small engine options: a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel delivering 180 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo gas engine producing 247 hp and 269 lb-ft. Both motors perform well for their size, but it takes comparing the 6-cylinders to really see what these vehicles can do.

The V-6 is the only option for the base model Lexus RX 350. This 3.5-liter motor delivers 295 hp and 268 lb-ft. The Jaguar's is gutsier, a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 delivering a hefty 380 hp and 332 lb-ft.

Fuel Economy

Neither vehicle is a gas-guzzler, but the engine determines how much you'll pay at the pump. By providing small 4-cylinder motors, Jaguar can boast better fuel economy of up to 26 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 33 mpg on the highway for the diesel. However, with Lexus only offering a V-6, this doesn't tell the whole story.

A better comparison puts both 6-cylinder vehicles side by side, and here Lexus comes out on top. Its RX 350 gets 20 mpg in the city and 27 on the open road, compared to the V-6 F-Pace, which offers 18 mpg on urban streets and 23 on the freeway.

Safety & Security

Both vehicles help you feel safe behind the wheel with features like airbags, antilock brakes, tractional control, lane departure and blind spot warning systems, and electronic stability systems all standard. But Jaguar's safety credentials are a little more extensive.

The F-Pace and RX 350 both offer child safety locks so children can't open their doors when the car is stopping or in motion. However, the F-Pace's locks set the standard. The driver can activate them and deactivate them while behind the wheel and see at a glance whether they're engaged. In contrast, the RX 350's locks engage with manual switches at each rear door and have no visual display.

All-Wheel Drive is standard on the F-Pace but an optional extra on the RX 350. The F-Pace also has a unique Whiplash Reduction System to protect drivers and front passengers on rear impact. The driver alert monitor detecting inactivity is a handy feature on the upgraded F-Pace models that we don't see on any RX 350.

Both Jaguar and Lexus offer comprehensive warranties, but Jaguar edges out the competition here. The F-Pace comes with a five-year/60,000-mile base warranty. You're not protected for as long or as far in the RX 350, which has a four-year/50,000-mile warranty. During the warranty period, Jaguar's customers receive 24-hour roadside assistance and all scheduled maintenance while Lexus springs for the first two scheduled services.

The 2018 model Jaguar F-Pace and Lexus RX 350 are both superb motor vehicles with their own strengths and character. The decision of which one is a better fit for you likely comes down to personal preference. If you're still unsure, test-drive both luxury vehicles and see which one makes you feel best behind the wheel.
